Title: Cherokee Language Animal Book
Duration: 1 day
Objective:
- The student will create a five-page book with drawings of animals and the corresponding name using the Cherokee language.
- The student will share their books with fellow classmates and pronounce the animal’s names using the Cherokee language.
Materials and Resources:
Procedure:
- Visit the website cited and have students choose five animals to draw. Provide students with handout with animal names in the Cherokee language.
- Students will be given two sheets of paper to fold in half and staple in the middle to create their book.
- Students will draw one animal per page in their books and write out the name of the animal using the Cherokee language. Have the students be creative, they can draw the chosen animals in a scene where they feel the animal might live. (This could be integrated with another lesson on animals and their habitats.)
- Students will need to have a title for their book on the cover.
- Once finished, students will share their books with the class and pronounce the names of the animals they chose to draw.

- Scoring scale to be determined by teacher
- Recommended to keep in mind:
Full credit – student completes the assignment to the best of his/her ability follows each step, does not misuse material (media)
Half credit – student partially completes assignment to the best of his/her ability
No credit – student does not complete assignment, and misuses the material.
